~ a word about blindness ~
It is overwhelming and devastating. I lost my perfect vision when I was bitten by a spider on the tip of my nose while I lay sleeping. It destroyed my immune system. Recovery has been long and arduous.
I’ve always been a painter and sculptor, attended Blind School in Pacific Grove, California where I had an art gallery downtown Carmel, across the street from Clint Eastwood’s restaurant, Hog’s Breath Inn.
I absolutely hated Blind School, it was very depressing.  When they offered (tried to force me, actually), I refused to go away to a California Residential School for the Blind for their one year program while being paired with a dog.  I knew absolutely that I would kill myself but my continual response was, “No, I won’t go. Who is going to pick up all that poop?”
So, locally, I was trained on how to find something when you dropped it, how to cook, make tea and coffee without burning the house down, how to put a key in a lock, how to get around town, and how to read Braille. I absolutely refused to take the white cane mobility class and learn how to get on a city bus. They threatened I would not graduate without passing that class.
Everyday, from my little Carmel house over on Crespi, I walked to gallery Atelier Chloe Dee Noble.  And when I finally forced myself to use that dreaded white cane, I ran the tip of it along the little stick fences that lined the charming cottages.  I began to recognize where I was exactly by the sound the fence made and each day when I arrived at the gallery I sat at the piano to pick out those tones. It became a tune I could hear in my mind while envisioning where I was exactly on the narrow streets.  I named the piece, “The Carmel Suite”, eventually that white cane became my very best friend and I couldn't imagine life without it.
Okay, so.  You get the picture.
The purpose of this little story is specifically for YOU.
Most of my friends are artists, authors, musicians, actors. Many talented people with incredibly beautiful souls.
Recently, I communicated with the lady at talking books and explained that the second corneal transplant I received is failing and there is less than 25% hearing remaining in one ear and the other ear is dead beyond repair. Soon, I won’t be able to hear the books they send me and I need to reopen my access to Braille books so I may make a smoother transition. The first one arrived yesterday.
I have never accepted disability payments although they are frequently offered. I continue to work everyday and, even I am amazed at how, although not the same, my work is acceptable and reflects the reality of my current ability.
So, when you are out and about, if you see a person, don’t assume they can hear. Don’t assume they can see.
If you think they need assistance, please kindly offer.
If you have written a book, please submit it to be recorded for the blind to hear or read with their fingertips. If you are an actor, please offer your voice to read the books being recorded for the blind. Please offer your talents to those who need you and your great big heart.
Lovingly ~ your friend Chloe Dee Noble
